The good pain”, final exhibition Art School Maa, 2016.

This artwork of five photographs is based on a research I did for my master’s thesis in social and cultural anthropology, a year-long project of participant observation among female crossfitters. I look into the relationship between senses, perception, and knowledge construction through the idea of “good pain”. The concept of “good pain” brings forth the two opposing mandates prevalent in Western thought; work ethic and pleasure ethic. This project examines how this contradiction is contested and conformed to by women in a cultural environment that encourages continuous competition and aspiration for betterment.
